Ah, but I knew his voice!

I had never met Michael Cloud in person. I was waiting for him, beside the Harry Browne for President table at the Colorado Libertarian convention. While I waited I neatly fanned out the brochures and other material Michael had sent. A short ugly little man started to rifle the items on the table. As the only volunteer near enough to protect these items I stepped forward and challenged him with a "HI!" Just to let him know he was being watched. It was of course Michael.

Michael is a world class salesman, a beautiful human, and a fine looking man. Yeah, like many of us he packed himself a knapsack full of rocks to carry on this march through life. Of course, who but a masochist would create for themselves the job of teaching Libertarians to "let the nice people take the brochures - we're trying to give away"! I credit Michael, Joe Johnson and a few other wise souls with teaching me to sometimes, just sometimes, shut up and take yes for an answer.

Libertarians - ya know, cancel that - People, too often when it comes to politics, seem to pick a team, Stranger Danger! Pick a team and be a good team member by being willing to fight to the death for that team. Anyone here old enough to remember the old advertising tag-line "I'd rather fight than switch"! I mean, the people who actually thought that are dead - from cancer! Politics is not where man's good angels come to roost.

Our recent storm has me reading Magna Carta - THE BIRTH OF LIBERTY by Dan Jones. The book talked about the two brothers who were the Kings before the Magna Carta. The people of England literally lionized Richard the Lion-Hearted while threatening civil war with the villainous King John. Sure, Richard marched around the middle east killing Muslims. People do like a good holy war! He also laid waste to the Treasury and raised taxes, never captured Jerusalem (he did get a stalemate with Saladin) and barely spent time in England. Evil King John fought with the French (and lost!) wasted the Treasury and raised taxes. He actually spent incredible amounts of time traveling England and actually administering. Neither seemed to give a hoot about the average peasant and the Magna Carta was about the country's richest few, their power and their money.

No Travis, I'm not going to argue the role of the Magna Carta in history with you! (You'd run circles around me! Having read more than my just half of a book on it.) My point is more modern. Do you think Obama or Trump is The GOAT or a goat? Are you just on a team? Do your beliefs on war and the War Powers Act depend on who is King? How 'bout taxes, the richest few politicians and their money or do you care about the debasement of your wealth and currency? Ah, your power and Rights?? Let's go down those Amendments, does it depend which team is debasing them? The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th - anybody for the 16th? And most importantly who keeps electing Lindsey Graham - does annnybody like him!

So with the recent killing in Minneapolis I would ask you my friends, neighbors and family can I stand with you? Did you say yes or no to those questions about team and principles? Still on the edge about a few? That's OK! Still like Trump or Obama? Fine I get it. Liberty is a process. It's not man's nature and it wasn't born whole with the Magna Carta. Would you like a brochure?

Bad Boys

The Buddhist monk Thicht Nat Han offers a mindfulness meditation using breathing. Like most things I've bastardized it to the point that I'd hate to have to tell him I got it from him as he might raise a skeptical eyebrow. Adam woke, to a sense of clarity. He felt like the the threads of the universe were connecting through his body. Every bird was sitting while he identified their call. Sandcastles

Hey all, I am literally surrounded by life. The window in front of my desk looks out to my garden. The garden is lush green with knee high garlic and potato-onions, flowering arugula and crimson clover, along with second runs of spinach and cilantro getting ready to pick. Beside me under a grow light is a tray of tiny tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, sage, melons and squash. Lord the squash! Thinking the seed was old I heavily over seeded the little pots. I should be so vigorous in my old age. The thinning will be a problem but that is for another day. For now I needed to clear the pile of seed packets off the laptop and write. I'm stuck in a loop. I think that's what software programmers call it. I know the roots of this hopelessness are firmly planted in the utter destruction of our cabin and property in the forest fire that I alluded to in the last blog's prologue. Knowing the source of a polluted stream doesn't really help if your just wallowing in it. It's the wallowing that is the loop. Bleeping grackles

I've just spent the last 15 minutes searching bird guides on-line and on paper to try to figure out what is nesting in the grape arbor. It looks like a nuthatch or wren that has dressed to go to work for UPS. It's incredibly tiny and quite cute but clearly not one to be pushed around. When I first saw it at the beginning of summer it was trying to take over a bird house I had created out of an old boot. Some chickadees had moved in and I was thrilled to see the house used. The chickadees had dutifully carried a boots worth of material from the yard to their nest. At a moment when both the male and female were out collecting material my little UPS bird 'discovered' the boot. He sat at the hole pulling material out. Clearly their tastes in furnishings were different you could almost see him (her?) shaking his head "this straw with those drapes - come on!". Tommy the Turtle tours Tulsa

As I slowed for the stoplight on the 4 lane I was inspired. The gym had been drudgery. To be done and now done. The library didn't have the book I was looking for but I grabbed some others. But there, there at the edge of the lane, making one of those comical steps that turtles make, was a small turtle raising his foot to triumphantly step on the white finish-line. I broke into a smile sharing in his Olympic moment. As traffic started to move I thought about jumping out to move him to the grass on the shoulder. But would that confuse him and cause him to turn around?! I looked in the mirror as I drove away. No one was being an idiot and driving over the line. Place your bets

Adam was filling his water tank. More exactly, Adam was draining his water tank onto the compost pile while the rain was filling it and threatening to overflow the tank. Spring is a complicated time. Early spring is a dance with winter. Plant out too early and the plants will die or go into shock and actually take longer to grow. The spinach which poked up is great for an evening salad but it might stunt the onions it surrounds if allowed to grow too much. Leave the water tank to fill and overflow and the adjacent wood chips will wash down the hill. Leave the the drain open you capture no water for the dry weeks ahead. - Time to check the tank level. He put his hat on and walk in the rain. The rain had been gentle and steady. Even with the drain open there was some overflow but nothing disastrous. Flash, Boom, Ow!

I think there are 3 major reasons to get out of bed in the morning. Our cat (Maisie) demonstrated the 3rd, fear. The storm last night gave us some cool relief and an open bedroom window. A close clap of thunder from the storm sent Maisie from warmly snuggling with Deb to rocketing out of the room. She used my, thankfully closed, eye as a launching pad from the bed to the door. I'm just glad 80# Cooper doesn't sleep on the bed! The #1 reason I get up in the morning I'll leave to your imagination. #2 is hope, excitement, I get to, or any of a thousand other names for having a purpose for the day. Sure the purpose can be as contrived as I've gotta walk the dogs or I gotta check see if there is a mouse in the live trap. GARDENER ON THE ROOF

The two most important things in making pesto are, get a food processor and don't get caught licking the bowl. I'm trying to take the high road here. You know the one about it's not what happens to you but your reaction that matters. It's been a hot and humid spring into summer and August is days away. I might go down hugging my air conditioner but damn it, I will adapt. I don't have to have the shower 1st thing in the morning. I can get up earlier and nibble at the garden work. And yeah, cutting and freezing onions and making pesto aren't technically garden work. They are however garden adjacent, do need to be done and importantly inside work. Don't get me wrong. I am the luckiest man in the world and a piece of that is my garden. Even if I chose to move that garden a zone further south and a million percent higher humidity. I will adapt and acclimate. It just takes time. 'sides no matter where you live you're always making pesto in hot weat...
