So, Mike Coffman, Proposition DD, and Coors walk into a bar. Who buys the 1st round? It's not so much the beginning to a joke as a speculation about Colorado's future. (spoiler alert I would guess it will be the taxpayers and they'll be told they like it!) While walking the dog this morning after reading Ed Sealover's article about Coors leaving town it occurred to me these three have something in common, water.
Coors for years told us it's the water , and with the brand now simply part of some bean counters balance sheet in Chicago that is more true than ever. Coor's water rights are deeply senior. Equally important they are proximate to a large thirsty population. If they haven't already realized the value of those two things (I would guess they know!) I would guess that they are about to be invited out for a drink to talk about unlocking value.
I'm listening as I write to James Brown 50th Anniversary Collection and had to smile with the thought could he have written IT'S A MAN'S, MAN'S MAN'S WORLD in an age of non binary gender identity. Gosh my mind does keep me amused!
I live in Lakewood and I've long speculated that those of us on the west side look outside and see mountains and thus limits to growth (witness the 1% growth caps of both Golden and Lakewood and the anti growth take over of Green Mtn Water district) Yeah we've got our DRCOGers especially within the bureaucracy but not nearly to the extent of say Aurora. In Aurora the mountains are a pretty picture in the distance but the sun rises in the East over lots and lots of flat cheap land just waiting for value to be added to it. The only real limit to that growth has always been water. Mike Coffman like John Elway has taken over from a family dynasty and while it might be a rebuilding year or twelve, the mantra is still the same. Growth is oxygen. Grow or die. If Mike Coffman doesn't already know it (I'd guess he does!) He needs water.
I no more have a deep understanding of DD than the rest of the westsiders who voted for taxing and legalizing a vice. 'tho as a former bartender I've learned to trust my gut when I judge the motivation of the players and thus I voted against it's libertine appeal. But I do know DD is about to inject a huge amount of money into all things water related. Certainly dams will be on the list, but to store water you have to have water and Aurora has scratched and wrestled (and dried up a farm or two) with some engineering marvels to build the next generations slums. A big deep 'pool' of Rocky Mtn sweet just minutes away ain't going to be over looked.
So I would guess that in that metaphorical bar the first round will be whisky and the evening will be finished with champagne (beer is so proletarian) and the tab will be payed for by, well taxpayers. But mind you everyone will get what they want. Golden will loose jobs when the brewery finally and totally closes but like Gates Rubber the site will reopen with nifty lofts. The players will get to play another round of 'economic development & growth' and Denver won't be left behind a some second tier city. There will however be a little less there- here. Doug A.
